Is cashmere sustainable?

Unfortunately, all that glitters is not gold. There is a reason why cashmere has always been considered a luxury material. To create the sweater you saw in the shop window and is so comfortable now that you’ve worn it, you need a quantity of fiber produced by as many as four goats. A single one produces only 100 grams. Virgin cashmere is the material with the highest environmental impact. One hundred times more than wool.

Cashmere wool production actually has a significant impact on the environment, particularly in the regions of Mongolia and China, which are the world’s largest producers of cashmere.

The increased demand for cashmere has led to a significant increase in the number of goats raised for their wool. This has several environmental effects. For starters, goats are known for their intensive grazing. Unlike other species, such as sheep, which tear up grass with their teeth, goats tear plants directly from the roots, preventing regeneration. As a result, large grazing areas are turning into barren desert land, a process known as desertification.

Additionally, goats produce more greenhouse gases than other wool-producing animals, such as sheep. This contributes to rising global levels of greenhouse gases and climate change.

The cashmere industry also impacts local wildlife. Increasing numbers of goats may lead to greater competition for resources with other species, pushing them towards extinction. One example is the snow leopard, a threatened species that lives in the same regions where cashmere goats are raised. Competition for food and space with goats is one of the factors that puts this species at risk.

Recognizing these issues, some companies and organizations are trying to promote more sustainable cashmere production practices. For example, there are efforts to encourage sustainable goat farming and responsible pasture management.

Furthermore, and this is the topic of this website, cashmere recycling is another strategy that certainly helps reduce the pressure on the production of new wool.

TO MAINTAIN YOUR CASHMERE

Some useful tips

If you want your cashmere pullover to keep warm and soft, you have to follow some simple instructions.

First of all, put your pullover to soak in lukewarm water and use just a little bit of detergent or shampoo. In case the pullover has stripes or bright colours, add a little bit of white vinegar.
Leave your pullover to soak for a short time, 10-15 minutes maximum and never rub it: cashmere must always be handled with care!
Patiently rinse your pullover with a lot of lukewarm water and more than once, until water runs clear.
Never wring. Eliminate water from your garment pressing it gently.
Wrap it in a towel to eliminate excess water.
Spread out your garment on a horizontal surface. Do not expose your garment to direct sunlight. Dry at room temperature and never put it on a radiator.
Iron with powerful steam jet. Never press with iron.
Wash your Cashmere garment often, since in this way fibres will find new vigour and your garment will always look as new.

A small, last suggestion: we recommend to always put back your cashmere items inside Due Toscani’s box and to keep them in a cool and dry spot.

FOR YOUR CASHMERE SWEATER

Choose the right size

When you submit an order, we will give you a measurements tab for each model, such as the one in the picture.

As you can see, there are measurements signaled with letters on various parts of the sweater sketch.

The most important ones, both for men and women, are:

– Chest A
– Chest length B
– Sleeve Length Above D
– Shoulder to Shoulder P
– Behind neck M

Take a shirt with the right size and compare the leghts with those described in our measurements tab.

The measures with signals are the most important ones, and they have to match as much as possible, to get you to have all the right sizes. Other measures could also slightly change, depending on the type of model, but these should be as precise as possible.

What may be more varied among these four is the chest length: in fact, there are patterns that may be a bit longer, such as cardigans, and others a little shorter, but it is still important to make sure that the size you want to buy is not too short.
